Why have a Maternity Nurse?

A Maternity Nurse is there to assist and support mother and baby in the first few weeks. They generally work six days a week, 24 hours a day. Some maternity nurses will do 8-12 hour night or day shifts. In addition to caring for your baby they may also advise you on matters such as breastfeeding, getting your baby into a routine, baby equipment and weight gain patterns. It is advisable to book a Maternity Nurse as early as possible. Please note that Maternity Nurses are self-employed.

A maternity nurse's prime responsibility is with the mother and baby but some may be prepared to undertake further duties such as shopping, food preparation, help with older siblings but this will depend on each individual maternity nurse and is best to agree these 'extra' duties in advance. A maternity nurse is not responsible for general cleaning or household laundry.

What makes a Maternity Nurse?

A Maternity Nurse is normally someone from a nanny or midwifery background who has gained a large amount of newborn baby experience and is therefore in a position to advise and assist.

How much do Maternity nurses charge?

One baby
Twins
Triplets
Daily/Nightly rate

£500 - £600 gross per week
£650 - £750 gross per week
£800 - £900 gross per week
£9.00 - £12.00 gross per hour per baby

Should a baby be late and a booked maternity nurse's start date is delayed the client would be required to pay half their salary as a retainer. As Maternity Nurses are self-employed they will more than likely have their own contracts and therefore it is advisable to discuss cancellation charges, travel costs, etc. with the individual Maternity Nurse concerned.

How long would I need to book a Maternity Nurse for?

Most Maternity Nurse bookings vary in length between 1 week and up to about 12 weeks, although some bookings can last up to 6 months.

Once you decide that you no longer need a Maternity Nurse we would be very pleased to help you find a suitable nanny if required. You may find it useful for the nanny and maternity nurse to have some sort of overlap, especially if the baby is still quite young.
